Critical survival skills for boys will need in the future!

In response to a post last month about the impact of media on boys, a contributor (and awesome man-maker) named Charley M. sent along a recommendation to view the following clip. It describes some of the important survival skills boys are learning from video games today which they many need in the future.

As a man invested in calling other men into service for boys, I think this clip has an important message for all of us regarding the impact of video games on boys. Let me know what you think in the comments section.

  1. This is a joke, right? I'm hoping you can dislodge your tongue from being firmly implanted in your cheek! :-)

I just love the off-beat humor of The Onion! Yet, sometimes they hit the nail on the head, like this weird "news" clip. I would like to hope that not all parents would be considering this particular "either/or" approach.

One of my favorite guidelines for raising boys is this one, from Robert Penn Warren:

“. . .in their version of immortality, the fathers kept watch on sons to be sure that truth was spoken, and that each showed himself a man.”This is a far more courageous and "time-consuming" task than imagining external, 6-foot radioactive beetles, or knowing which battle plans/weapons to choose in order to win the battle.

But. . . .this is what ensures our survival.

  3. Yes Mike, I'm really just kidding. I did love this way of describing the sad truth about too many young males being hypnotized by the addictive video games.

  4. Love "The Onion" and this video. Thanks for sharing. As a Mom raising a son w/out male participation, I struggle everyday to know what is right and best for him. He hates that I have never allowed violent video games in this home. Thanks for the encouragement and the chuckle.

  5. Hi Earl, I just wanted to let you know that I think you’re doing a great job. I love it when I see I have a message from you. I have 3 teenagers; I find the stuff you send through enormously helpful especially with my son but not surprisingly equally as valuable for my daughters as well.

I loved the video and its satirical nature (which I thought was obvious) perhaps it’s the cultural difference between Australians and Americans I’ve noticed we tend to be more irreverent about things than you guys, not that that’s necessarily always a good thing!!

    Cheers mate
